As a mother, I have always been a sucker for rituals or routines or traditions. Some of them I copy from my childhood or a book I have read or an idea shared by another mom. I have two "meal" traditions that I have done with my kids since they were babies. The first is Valentines Day! I love this day and it's always so much fun with my kids. Every Valentine's day morning, I wake up and make pancakes. I dye the batter red...cook them up and cut-out hearts. I also throw in a couple of handfuls of chocolate chips to make it even more sweeter. My kids always know they are coming and look forward to that "special" morning.

Just writing this post, I have quite a few. But, another "meal" tradition, I do are birthdays. The only thing is that I throw out the "meal" and replace it with dessert. The morning of my kid's birthdays I whip up an extra special cupcake on the birthday plate and they eat that! I know it's full of sugar and icing but my kids love it! Nothing like starting your special day with something "sweet".
I have also been known to dye the eggs "green" on St. Patrick's Day. Cinnamon rolls served the morning of our family Christmas or a big breakfast the FIRST day of school. Making "meal" time special and unique is another way to tell your family you love them!
What special traditions or meals does your family have?

red chocolate chip pancakes sounds awesome! we would just eat candy on valentines day breakfast - since my dad would buy us a little cute candybar.

We have lots of traditions, especially ones that revolve around food! For starters, I can't wait for cornbread dressing at Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteonecheaplady@yahoo.com
I have always made treats in colors and shapes coinciding with the holiday. Rice Krispie treats red and heart shaped for Valentines, Frosted Flakes wreaths dyed green for Christmas, etc.
ReplyDeleteI love to make baby cupcakes and cakepops to coincide with the occasion as well.
On Christmas we eat crockpot french toast, but on Thanksgiving we eat turkey for breakfast :)

Pumpkin Rolls - we make tons of them for family and friends and then my son has to make his very own.

When I was growing up and we were all in middle school/high school, we would have lasagna for Christmas dinner, then go bowling.

There's always the favorite meal for the birthday person, but aside from that, nothing I'd really call a tradition. I love the valentines day idea in particular. I recall many years where that day was a disappointment at school, and something like that would make it seem a real holiday.

It's a tradition for me to make scrambled eggs with cheese every weekend for my husband. Also smoked salmon and champagne on Christmas morning, which is my favorite!
ReplyDeleteLove the valentines day pancakes idea!

We have family breakfasts on Saturdays when we are in no rush to get out of the house. My kids like french toast or pancakes.
ReplyDeleteMCantu1019@aol.com
Our ritual consists of me cooking breakfast every morning. Scrambled eggs, sometimes waffles, crepes, french toast, or oatmeal. Then I help the kiddos get ready! On holidays we always make a little something holiday related for breakfast, like Boo-Berry Muffins!

ReplyDeleteEvery year we have a Christmas morning strata!
ReplyDeletetattgiff at centurytel dot net
We have done the same for Bdays...special meals through out the day...funny, my husband thinks eating cake for breakfast is FINE...same as sweetrolls or sugar sweetened cereal he says...so had to laugh at that picture!
ReplyDeleteWe have a heart shaped waffle maker so we DO them on Valentines day! just like you tint the pancakes on St. Pats (and Lucky the Leprechaun tints our milk green too!)
our big traditional breakfast is Christmas when we again make the heart shaped waffles topped with strawberries, then kids are allowed to go CRaZy with Redi whip! they mound it up and toss on a few sprinkles fast before their CHRISTMAS TREE melts! also have lots of baked omelet, breakfast meats, sweet rolls and yummy home made holiday candies to graze on! of course we r in total sugar coma's the rest of the day and watch movies like slugs!
thanks much!

Christmas morning is a special meal: breakfast casserole and french toast. Birthdays too are a special meal: birthday person pick! Usually it's pizza or spaghetti! Sometimes steak.
ReplyDeleteBirthdays are a treat for us~ Each person selects their favorite meal. Mother's Day, Father's Day, and Christmas each have their tradition inour family!

My boyfriend loves to make Thanksgiving dinners and he is terrific at it! Even if we go to my Mom's for actual Thanksgiving, he usually still cooks a turkey with all of the trimmings for the two of us to have on another day close to Thanksgiving. And all of my relatives appreciate...(um, make that expect) my homemade fudge every Christmas. I can't blame them. It's really good, if I do say so myself :0)
ReplyDeleteNew Years Day we all go to my parents house and eat pancakes and hamburger with gravy. It is good and the only day we eat it.

ReplyDeleteWe like to have special breakfasts on sat. or sundays with a wide variety of breakfast foods!
ReplyDeleteOur special breakfasts were usually on Sunday or special occasions like birthdays. I cooked breakfast almost every day when my children were younger but it evolved into cereal on weekdays and DH made breakfast on Saturday.
ReplyDeleteTweet - http://twitter.com/willitara/status/29212690270
ReplyDeleteChristmas morning is the certainly my favorite morning. My kids are early morning risers, and Christmas morning is no different. They are up usually at about 6am. We watch them open all their presents while my husband and I drink our coffee. The stash of new toys keeps them busy while I start cooking breakfast. Our tradition is french toast (made with my mother's homemade Challah bread), bacon, eggs, and homemade home fries. We feast and it usually keeps us full and satisfied until Christmas dinner is ready!
ReplyDeleteNow that my kids are grown and have kids of their own, my husband and I can do whatever we want when we want...sometimes we are able to join them but other times they are visiting other relatives and my husband and I go out to eat..no mess, no clean-up It works for me

We always have breakfast at my house Christmas morning! We invite my aunt and uncle, mom and dad, grandparents - and everyone sits down for a nice family breakfast and my 5 year old son gets to show off his gifts from Santa! This year we'll have a new addition - I have a baby due in a week, so it will be a little more challenging, but definitely special! I'll be out on unpaid maternity leave through Christmas, so I would LOVE to win this to help actually purchase our breakfast items. Thanks for the chance! Here's crossing my fingers!! :)

Sunday mornings are always a special morning. We have a big breakfast that varies from week to week as we each take turns picking our favorites! Now that we are older, we all take turns preparing the meal. We turn off the telephone, gather as a family, and share our stories, joke around, and spend quality time together.
