Dealing with the Morning Rush

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

Plan, plan, plan and a little more planning. This school year, our mornings have been more rushed and out of sorts with three kids going to school. I have a couple of kids who are as slow as molasses and no matter what time I wake them up they are down at the table the same time! So as a mom, I have to plan and get as much as I can ready the night before. This really helps a lot and makes the mornings go smoother.

My nightly routine is...

* Lay out all their clothes (from undies to pants)
* Make lunches. I even fill their water thermos and put it in the frig the night before.
* Lay out bowls, spoons and cereal on the table.
* Make sure all binders, papers and backpacks are ready. Sometimes we even put them in the car the night before!
* I even lay out their vitamins on the table.

I have been known to put toothpaste on the toothbrushes the night before BUT my kids were not to fond of that! The point of all this, is that anything that can be done the night before makes our mornings better. I have talked before that I make a breakfast schedule. Cereal is the perfect and easy breakfast in our house. I know eating healthy cereal with piece of fruit will hold my kids till lunch. I usually have about 2 to 3 types of cereal for my kids to pick from. Also, cereal is a great breakfast because the kids can clean up and put their bowls in the dishwasher. It is perfect for those mornings that you feel rushed!

We also put our cereal in bags and eat in the car when we are running late~

How does your family avoid the "morning rush"?

  2. When my step-daughter was school aged, I made sure she got up in plenty of time to get ready and have a good breakfast. We always organized her clothes and back pack the night before so she could maximize her morning time and get off to a good start.

  23. We homeschool, so we have a little freedom to not deal with a time constarint, so we have a morning routine that the kids know they have to complete before we start the day. They have to have their Quiet/Bible Time, Clean their room, make their bed, get dressed, brush their teeth, wash their face, and eat breakfast.

  35. Well, we actually avoid it by homeschooling! :) If I had kids who were leaving for school in the morning, though, I would totally lay out their clothes and things the night before.

  36. I'm all about laying everything out early too - and then I always make sure to stick a can of Diet Pepsi in the fridge the night before - it's my "fuel" in the mornings!

  37. Mornings are just mean!
No one in my family likes anything about mornings. We rush (even when we get up earlier) and hurry out the door.
It's something about our genetic makeup, I think!

  38. I iron all the clothes the night before & lay them out- even shoes. I also pack the bag the night before.

  39. We try to get everything packed and together the night before - school backpacks, lunches, folders filled out, notes to teachers, clothes laid out, mommy's work lunch made, I even lay out my jewelry - THEN I make sure to get up a little before the kiddos to get coffee made, breakfast made, etc. Of course, I have a new baby due the end of this month, so our morning routines may be a little out of whack for a while!! :)

  55. My kids are pretty self sufficient for breakfast. They love yogurt cups, so that is a no brainer. What I do do that makes life easier for them is pre-cut the English muffins and bagels. My older son is old enough to toast them himself, but I don’t quite trust his knife skills yet, so if they are already cut, it’s one less thing we have to worry about.

  56. i try to avoid the morning rush by waking up earlier than the rest of the family and getting things done so i can head out the door before anyone wakes up

  57. Made my kids independent early (young). They laid out their own clothes. They all had resposibilities and shared in the daily routines including breakfast. The family sit together for breakfast. My daughter has 6 and as young as 2 they have tasks. She doesn't have the time to lay out their clothes but she does have the time to teach them to do it for themselves. Doing it for them only saves time in the short run.
